Whoopi Goldberg is just not going to take over her role as Deloris Van Cartier in the Sister Act The Musical.
Goldberg, 65, was anticipated to perform opposite Jennifer Saunders ("Absolutely Fabulous") at the forthcoming London revival of the 1992 "Sister Act" movie. Sadly, owing to the postponement of production in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Goldberg could no more be leading the dance.
The show's website has declared a delay due to "continuing government regulations leading in further delays in production... This big change of dates indicates that Whoopi Goldberg would no likely be possible to act in the character of Deloris Van Cartier."
Goldberg in her statement revealed, "Sister Act is near and dear to my heart and I'm disappointed that I will be unable to perform in this production under the circumstances,". However, my production partners and I will strive to operate on making a wonderful production, with an incredible new cast, and we look forward more to delivering it when it could be done safely for everybody on stage, behind the scenes and in the audience."
Fans saddened that they will not see Goldberg in the Sister Act, the musical can still look forward to seeing her comeback as Deloris in the Sister Act 3.
The third feature instalment of the franchise, currently being produced by Goldberg alongside Tyler Perry, is scheduled to be streamed to Disney+.The film was released in 1992 and received Golden Globe awards for Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, and Best Actress—Motion Picture Comedy or Musical (Goldberg).
