Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has shared her thoughts on relationships, revealing why she is not a fan of making the first move when it comes to romance. The award-winning star made the comments during an interview with BET Awards pre-show hosts Bow Wow and Rosci Diaz, where she was asked about Nigerian international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and whether she would consider approaching him romantically.
When asked if she knew the Super Eagles shot-stopper, Tems responded: “I wish I did.” However, the conversation took a different turn when she was asked if she would be willing to “shoot her shot” at Okoye.
Tems quickly dismissed the idea, saying: “We don’t shoot shots over here.”
Explaining her perspective on relationships, the singer said she values genuine connections built on friendship, mutual respect and a strong sense of community rather than actively pursuing romantic interests.
“We friend each other and we are family, sisters and brothers,” she added.
Her remarks have since generated debate on social media, with opinions divided over whether women should make the first move in relationships. While some users applauded Tems for staying true to her beliefs, others argued that there is nothing wrong with women expressing interest first.
Members of the TSB Instagram community also weighed in on the discussion. One commenter questioned the relevance of the conversation, writing: “Very silly question. Does he not have a gf and a baby?”
Another user described the exchange as uncomfortable, commenting: “Such an awkward question to ask.”
A third person praised the singer, saying: “Tems is on another level. Beauty, intelligence and humility.”
