Queen will Receive £30m Cash Bonus

The Queen will be receiving a £30m bonus due to a rule that insists that the size of the Queen's taxpayer-funded grant can never decrease.

Due to an obscure rule called the "golden ratchet" rule introduced by David Cameron's government in 2012, the Royal Family should receive the same Grant as the previous year even if the family's profits have decreased. The Royal Family's income is partly generated by the Sovereign Grant which is paid for by the government and funded by taxpayers. They currently receive payment of 86.3m a year.Whilst usually the taxpayer-funded Grant is 25% of the profits made by the Crown estate, the Crown estate has made less in the last two years due to the impact of the pandemic. This means that the Queen should technically be receiving approximately 27m less however the "golden ratchet" rule prevents this, resulting in a bonus being given instead. The Grant is used to fund things like the maintenance of properties, and royal trips abroad.

The Queen's Bonus amid Cost of Living Crisis

Other institutions funded by taxpayers are being heavily impacted by the cost of living crisis. Inflation in the UK has hit a record-breaking high and many valuable places such as schools and hospitals and police stations are experiencing high energy bills whilst still receiving the same income from the government.According to accounts recently published, the Royal Family have even been spending more in recent years as it was revealed that the 2021-2022 taxpayer-funded spending came to 104.4m which is an increase of 14.9m from the previous year. The anti-monarchy pressure group Republic were discussing the matter on Twitter and said:"The royals are not required to justify their spending in order to secure any increase in their budget, and they don't need to negotiate or face the possibility of cuts."While public services have been facing severe cuts for ten years and public sector workers have seen their incomes drop in real terms, the Sovereign Grant has increased by more than 55% since 2012."The Sovereign Grant is clearly absurd and indefensible. It is also deeply dishonest."
