PM Boris Johnson Apologises After Admitting he Attended Downing Street Garden Party

Prime Minister Boris Johnson apologized on Wednesday after admitting he attended a bring your own booze party at Downing street in May 2020 during the UK's first national lockdown.

Addressing lawmakers in the House of Commons, Johnson apologised saying: "There were things we simply did not get right and I must take responsibility".

In his defence, he claimed that he had thought the gathering to be a work event at the time and regretted not sending everyone back inside.

However, Mr Johnson's apology simply wasn't enough for members of the opposition labour party and some of from his own conservative party, who instead called for him to resign over the "partygate" scandal.

Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition Labour Party, accused Johnson of "months of deceit and deception" and said his apology "so ridiculous that it is actually offensive to the British public."

Responding to the call for his resignation, the PM said he did not think he should pre-empt the outcome of an internal investigation led by senior government official Sue Gray.

Details of the party first emerged on Monday, when British broadcaster ITV published a leaked email from Johnson's principal private secretary, Martin Reynolds.

In the email, more than 100 Downing Street employees were called "to make the most of this lovely weather and have some socially distanced drinks in the No. 10 garden" from 6 p.m. on May 20, 2020, a move that was in violation of lockdown rules at the time.

Mr Johnson has faced ever mounting pressure to resign since the allegations surfaced. It is also alleged that in addition to the "Bring Your Own Booze" party, more rule-breaking parties were held at Downing Street with the prime minister's knowledge.
