Man Arrested after Throwing Eggs at King Charles

A man has been arrested by police after eggs were thrown at King Charles during a visit to York.

The King and Camilla, the Queen Consort, were entering the city on Wednesday when a number of eggs were thrown from the crowd.

Footage captured four eggs getting close to the King however narrowly missing him and breaking on the road nearby instead.

Several police officers were then seen restraining the suspect on the ground behind the temporary fence set up specifically for the King's visit.

Reports from the scene said that the man shouted:  "this country was built on the blood of slaves".

Others spectators shouted "God save the King" as the incident unfolded.

The King remained calm and continued his walk accompanied by city dignitaries.

Andrea Wade, who was filming the arrival of the royal motorcade, was stood close to the man who was later arrested.

She said: "There was a commotion. I wasn't sure what was happening. I saw something get thrown, then someone said it was an egg. The next thing police were all over him and he was on the floor."

"They carried him off like a roll of carpet."

She continued,

"I overheard one of the policemen say 'there's always one' and I think that's right – in this day and age it's just one of those things."

North Yorkshire Police said a 23-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.

Despite this, the royal visit passed off "uneventfully" according to police.

Police commander, Charlotte Bloxham said,

"I'm pleased to report that the policing operation and the overall wider visit was successful today," she said.

"An enormous amount of planning and preparation goes into visits of this nature. I would like to thank all the officers and staff that supported todays operation."
