55% of conservatives think Liz Truss should resign after YouGov carried out a poll to see the party's opinions

Liz Truss

A new poll by YouGov has found that over 80% of conservatives think prime minster Liz Truss is doing a bad job, while 55% think she should resign. For the past two days, YouGov have been surveying 530 members of the Tory party for their opinions on the prime minster. Results found that Boris Johnson is the favourite to take over Truss, coming out ahead of Rishi Sunak and Ben Wallace. This news comes after Truss sacked former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and recruited Jeremy Hunt. When asked whether cabinet ministers supported Truss, the prime minster's official spokesperson said: "So I think certainly minsters were very involved in the discussions around preparations for the medium-term fiscal plan."It was an in-depth discussion where everyone was able to hear people's views on this important issue for the UK."The spokesperson then added: "The cabinet are fully supportive of the time minster. It was an effective and in-depth discussion."

Taking to social media after he was sacked, Kwarteng wrote in a statement: "You have asked me to stand aside as your Chancellor. I have accepted.

"When you asked me to serve as your chancellor, I did so in full knowledge that the situation we faced was incredibly difficult, with rising global interest rates and energy prices. However, your vision of optimism, growth and change was right. "As I have said many times in the past weeks, following the status quo was simply not an option. For too long this country has been dogged by low growth rates and high taxation – that must still change if this country is to succeed."The economic environment has changed rapidly since we set out the Growth Plan on 23 September. In response, together with the Bank of England and excellent officials at the Treasury we have responded to those events and I commend my officials for their dedication."
