Lizz Truss has just won the race to become the UK's new PM, following the resignation of Boris Johnson. She was voted in by Conservative party members across the country, beating her competitor Rishi Sunak who was the former chancellor. The public should expect to see many of her campaign promises come into fruition soon, surrounding topics such as the cost of living crisis, protecting safe spaces for women and street crime. Miss Truss, who has had many public supporters since the start of the race, will be succeeding Boris Johnson on Tuesday morning and become the UK's third ever female prime minister.
The former foreign secretary indicated during her speech that she would not be triggering an early general election, instead reinforcing her belief in the party and hoping for "a great victory for the Conservative Party in 2024".
She won with a 57% victory over Rishi Sunak's 43%, however this is one of the smaller margins in recent contests. Liz Truss, new prime minister, said it is an "honour to be elected" and she thanked her party being behind her during "one of the longest job interviews in history".She further issued her thanks to her "friend" Boris Johnson, who will no longer be the prime minister and holder of No.10 Downing Street from Tuesday onwards.She finished complimenting him by saying, "You got Brexit done. You crushed Jeremy Corbyn. You rolled out the vaccine and you stood up to Vladimir Putin".
