Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has once again criticised the UK Government over its stance on Israel following reports of a deadly Israeli airstrike in Gaza.

Sharing a Sky News report on X, Corbyn claimed Britain continues to provide military and intelligence support to Israel and argued that the UK is complicit in the ongoing conflict. His comments came in response to reports that six members of the same family were killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza.

In the post, Corbyn wrote:

“Britain is still supplying arms to Israel. Britain is still supplying intelligence. Britain is still complicit in genocide.”

Corbyn’s latest remarks are consistent with the position he has maintained for many years. Throughout his political career, he has been one of Westminster’s most outspoken supporters of Palestinian rights, repeatedly calling for the UK to suspend arms exports to Israel, impose sanctions on the Israeli government and recognise the State of Palestine. Since the war escalated following the Hamas attacks on 7 October 2023, he has continued to criticise successive UK governments, arguing they have not gone far enough in holding Israel to account.

According to reports, the latest Israeli airstrike killed six members of the same family in Gaza. The strike has prompted renewed concern over the humanitarian situation in the territory, with campaigners and some politicians calling for increased international pressure to protect civilians.

The current war began after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, during which around 1,200 people were killed and hundreds were taken hostage, according to Israeli authorities. Israel responded with a large-scale military campaign in Gaza aimed at dismantling Hamas and securing the release of the remaining hostages. Since then, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, while the conflict has displaced much of the territory’s population and devastated civilian infrastructure. Israel has consistently said it targets Hamas militants and military infrastructure and has accused the group of operating from within civilian areas.

Corbyn’s post attracted widespread attention on X, with many users praising his stance. One person commented:

Others disagreed with his criticism of the UK Government. One user commented:

“He doesn’t know countries sign alliance and war deals long before a war so they have to fulfil what they signed.”

The UK Government has consistently maintained that it supports Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international law while also calling for the protection of civilians, increased humanitarian aid into Gaza and progress towards a lasting peace. It has also suspended a number of export licences where it assessed there was a clear risk they could be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international humanitarian law. Corbyn’s latest comments are likely to add to the continuing debate over Britain’s role and responsibilities as the conflict continues.
