To combat the rising prices, households in the United Kingdom will receive energy bill discounts of £400 this autumn

Every household in the UK is set to receive energy bill discounts of £400 this autumn. This comes as part of a £15 billion package of new methods to combat rising prices.It was recently announced that the energy price cap is expected to rise from £1,971 to £2,800 in October.Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said that the poorest households will receive £650 to help with the cost of living.

Mr Sunak stated: "We know that people are facing challenges with the cost of living and that is why today I'm stepping in with further support to help with rising energy bills.

"We have a collective responsibility to help those who are paying the highest price for the high inflation we face.

"That is why I'm targeting this significant support to millions of the most vulnerable people in our society. I said we would stand by people and that is what this support does today."

Part of the £15 billion package will be funded bya 25% windfall tax on the profits of oil and gas firms. Speaking about the oil and gas industry, Mr Sunak said: "The oil and gas sector is making extraordinary profits, not as the result of recent changes to risk-taking or innovation or efficiency, but as the result of surging global commodity prices driven in part by Russia's war."

In response to the new package,House of Commons, the shadow chancellor, Rachel Reeves said: "Today it feels like the chancellor has finally realised the problems that the country is facing."We first called for a windfall tax on oil and gas producers nearly five months ago to help struggling families and pensioners."Today he has announced that policy but he can't dare say the words. It's a policy that dare not speak its name."
