British Tourists Will Have to Pay to Visit EU countries from Next Year

British tourists will have to pay to enter most European Union countries from 2023 onwards.

The new rules are are part of the post-Brexit rule changes and the fee will also unfortunately apply to a number of countries that are not in the EU.A new system called the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will screen travellers before they board a plane and is set to become a routine part of security checks for those planning to get into Schengen Area countries. The Schengen Area includes 22 EU countries such as Spain, Portugal, France and Greece as well as some non-EU states like Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein.

The new system is expected to be running by May 2023 and will work on a similar basis to the current protocol for British tourists applying and paying to enter the US. The cost of the application will start at £6 which is cheaper than the American cost currently at around £17.

However, once you have applied and payed the fee, it is valid for up to three years and therefore you are eligible to travel without redoing the application process during this time.

The application will be linked to your passport so airport security at the border will know whether you've received your approval or not leaving tourists who have arrived at the airport with just their passport and no completed ETIAS very disappointed.

The form is expected to only take a few minutes to complete and just as little time to approve however anybody who poses a potential flight risk can expect approximately a four day wait. In the more serious cases, an applicant might find themselves waiting up to four weeks to hear back however this is unlikely to happen to any tourists who is just wanting to go on holiday. If you fail your application you are permitted to appeal the decision as a criminal record may cause your application to be rejected.
