A British university student has sadly been found dead in Lisbon after going missing during a boat party on the River Tagus.

Julian Amaral, 23, had been on holiday in Portugal and was staying with his cousin in Montijo when he attended a maritime-tourism boat party on Tuesday night.

Around 200 people were reportedly aboard the vessel, which departed from the Alcântara area in Lisbon during the late afternoon before returning close to midnight.

According to accounts released by Julian's family, he was travelling back towards Lisbon with his cousin when he told them he was going to use the bathroom.

The pair did not see each other again.

When the boat party ended, Julian's cousin alerted the person responsible for the vessel that he was missing.

A search was subsequently launched, with Julian's body eventually discovered near a container terminal, just over 400 metres from where he was last seen.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place as authorities work to establish exactly what happened during the final moments of Julian's life.

Julian had been visiting Portugal as part of a holiday and had been staying with family before the tragedy unfolded.
