A 14-year-old boy who was fatally shot in south-east London has been identified as Eghosa Ogbebor. Police were called to reports of gunfire on Lord Warwick Street in Woolwich at approximately 15:40 BST on Thursday. Emergency services attended the scene, where paramedics attempted to save the teenager’s life. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the location. Authorities confirmed that his family has been notified.

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident: two boys aged 14 and 16, along with an 18-year-old man. All three are being held on suspicion of murder.

Investigators have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward. They are also seeking any CCTV or dashcam footage that may help establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Witnesses described scenes of panic in the immediate aftermath. Customers sitting outside a nearby pub, The Greyhound, reportedly rushed indoors after hearing gunshots. A staff member, Sofia Pereira, said she heard a loud bang and then saw a young person run across the pub’s patio area toward Woolwich Church Street.

She recalled hearing a heavy noise, which she believed was caused by someone colliding with a bin before fleeing the scene. According to her, around ten customers who had been outside quickly moved inside in fear, as the situation unfolded.

Pereira described the atmosphere as tense and overwhelming, with people alarmed not only by the sound of gunfire but also reports that one individual may have been carrying a machete. Patrons urged staff to secure the premises as uncertainty spread.

A local resident, an 18-year-old woman who lives on Lord Warwick Street, said the incident was deeply unsettling. She described it as shocking and said it felt strange returning to the area the following day. While she noted that incidents had occurred in the neighbourhood in recent years, she said a shooting still came as a surprise.

On Friday, police cordoned off the area around the scene, with a significant number of officers present. Floral tributes were placed nearby, and forensic teams were seen examining parts of the street, including a grassy area.

Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card expressed condolences to the victim’s family and acknowledged the impact the incident would have on the local community. She confirmed that the investigation is progressing quickly and that additional police patrols have been deployed in the area.

London mayor Sadiq Khan also responded, describing the killing as deeply tragic. He extended his sympathies to the victim’s family, friends, and the wider Woolwich community, condemning the violence and reaffirming that such incidents have no place in the city. He added that he remains in close contact with the Metropolitan Police as their investigation continues.
