More than 82,000 Argentina supporters have signed an online petition urging FIFA to replay the 2026 World Cup final after their nation's 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain.

The campaign was launched on Change.org by supporter Gisela Sanchez, who is appealing for football fans around the world to back calls for the tournament's showpiece match to be played again. The petition centres on criticism of the officiating during the final and accuses referee Slavko Vinčić of delivering what it describes as a "controversial and corrupt" performance. However, no evidence of wrongdoing by the referee has been established, and FIFA has not indicated that it intends to review the result.

On the petition page, Sanchez wrote:

"The recent final between Argentina and Spain was tarnished by the controversial and corrupt performance of the referee who, according to video evidence, was bought to influence the match’s outcome."

She continued:

"It is a MONUMENTAL disappointment for the players, coaches, and, above all, for the fans who crave to see a game decided by talent and dedication on the pitch, and not by rigged refereeing decisions."

The petition also argues that failing to investigate the claims could have wider consequences for the sport. It continues:

"If we allow corruption to go unnoticed on this global stage, we are setting a bad example for future generations of athletes and fans."

Concluding the appeal, Sanchez calls on football's governing body to intervene, writing:

"Therefore, we ask Fifa to review these incidents with seriousness and transparency, and to consider replaying the final, this time without the influence of a CORRUPT referee."

The petition has continued to gather momentum online, with thousands of supporters adding their names in support of a replay, although FIFA's regulations do not provide for a World Cup final to be replayed solely because of an online petition or dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions.

Several people who signed the petition also shared messages explaining why they believed the campaign should succeed. One supporter wrote:

"Let the final be replayed, they didn’t deserve something like this! Justice must be served!"

Another added:

"I’m signing this petition because I believe sport should be transparent and fair for everyone."

The petition has also prompted strong reactions from football fans outside Argentina, many of whom criticised the calls for the final to be replayed. One person wrote:

"Somebody start a petition to ban Argentina from all future FIFA competition."

Another commented:

"The crooks are complaining that the referee wasn't onboard with the crooked script. Now they want an opportunity to rewrite the crooked narrative. Olodo ode!"

A third added:

"The rest of the world needs to sign a petition to ignore Argentina's petition smh."

Meanwhile, another user said:

"Tell them it's actually okay to loose! Sh*t how many world cups do they have already like damn let Spain enjoy their win!!"

Spain were crowned world champions after Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the final in extra time, securing a historic victory over the defending champions. While the petition continues to attract signatures, there is currently nothing to suggest FIFA will reconsider the outcome of the match, meaning Spain's World Cup triumph stands.
